Concentrator for navigational dataThe task: The research vessel VALDIVIA is fitted with various pieces of navigational equipment the data of which serve both navigation and scientific experiments. As the appliances are operated independent of one another, the experiments cannot later be co-ordinated with the navigational data. The solution: Data concentrators were developed on PC basis to record the navigational data centrally, if necessary converting it into a standard format, and to pass it on to various entities. The operator can freely set up which incoming data from which input channel goes in which interval to which output channel. The navigational and experiment data of the various input devices are combined on monitors in the laboratories and on the bridge. At the same time, the data is stored at certain intervals, depending on the set-up, printed out, drawn on navigational plotters, sent to further concentrators and distributed around the whole ship by means of a closed circuit network. From this closed circuit network, the data can be imported into any computer system with standard I/O interfaces. The system is easy for the user to maintain. This is of particular importance for trips in polar regions where there are no computer shops. (J.
