WEB-based monitoring and control of industrial water treatmentThe task: Underground caverns used for storing fuels are flushed with salt water after use. The brine absorbs a small amount of hydrocarbons which evaporate during a water treatment process and are then removed from the air by an activated carbon filter. Due to the location being a remote one and the operation a non-stop one, it is necessary to automate the plant as far as possible by means of a remote monitoring system. The solution: Monitoring and control has been implemented in a three-tier hardware and software architecture. A programmable logic controller (PLC) (tier 1) controls the whole plant by means of a basically independent standard programme. If needed, data can be exchanged between the PLC and a LINUX Web server (tier 2) which not only records the data but also serves as server for link-up to the Web. Finally, the plant is monitored and the special programmes controlled by a JAVA Client (tier 3) with graphical user interface which can be started worldwide from a Web browser, provided the corresponding rights have been acquired. |
