Optimisation of production planning for steelworks
The task:
The main task in production planning is the provision of plants with orders. The succession of orders is orientated to restrictions such as delivery dates, capacity utilisation, production limitations, etc. The objective is to find an optimum sequencing of the orders.
The solution:
The problem lies in the mathematical area of whole-numbered optimisation - in the so-called flow shop problems. There exist no constructive algorithms for these problems; they can therefore only be solved by means of heuristics. On the basis of concrete operational tasks in a steelworks with a hot wide strip mill, algorithms were developed and evaluated to solve these problems. Particularly interesting here are the known stochastic search processes as evolution strategies.
