Image processing control system for applying road markings
The task:
Old road markings are to be fully automatically renewed by a marking vehicle, at the same time balancing out the steering deflections of the driver.
The solution:
As the problem is a time-critical real-time problem, the control system was developed as a transputer network permitting parallel processing of the data. For this purpose, an intelligent, electronic camera with integrated transputer was developed. The old marking is recorded by three of these cameras and the pictures pre-processed in the cameras. The new road marking is interpolated as curve from the camera data. With the aid of dynamic filters, the influence of the driver and errors in the marking caused by the weather and wear of the roads are compensated for, thus guaranteeing that the new marking is straight. The results of the interpolation and the filtering are evaluated and the airgun is automatically controlled. Picture recording, filtering and control of the airgun are all carried out parallel to one another on own transputers. This permits a high vehicle speed of up to 60 km/h.
