Presentation of scientific calculation results with computer-generated video films

The task:

Processes which spread over a certain period of time, such as, for example, the spread of harmful substances are to be visualised in the form of a film in order to reveal dynamic connections which are not presentable with individual pictures. On hand are individual computer-generated pictures which have emerged with the aid of simulation calculations, in various graphics formats. Studio quality was required at limited cost.

The solution:

A network-compatible control computer (TCP/IP) in client server technology was programmed for various video recorders (SONY-Umatic, Panasonic) which can send all network participants individual pictures or picture sequences in compressed form or in the original format. The control computer handles the conversion of the computer graphics into the television format (PAL) and steers the video recorder in such a way that a film emerges where all transitions are jolt-free. 25 image-exact cuts per film second are necessary, otherwise the human eye recognises the individual pictures. In order to display the results in transmittable studio quality, special filters were implemented which compensate the weaknesses of the PAL signal. The films can be copied on VHS or S-VHS cassettes without any problem. Direct drivers for video control and PAL conversion were implemented (AVS, Movie) for various key frame animators.
